Encampments

Encampments are temporary accommodations generally made up of outdoor tents and makeshift shelters. They can be in parks, parklands, greenbelts, private property, and other areas within the City. Within parks, encampments are in violation of the Park Lands By-law which outlines that overnight camping and loitering between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. is prohibited.

Once an encampment is located and investigated by Security Services, Peel Outreach is contacted. The Encampment Response Team, experienced with various backgrounds, works in partnership with local community agencies to offer support to people according to their individual needs.

Encampments in Brampton highlight the diverse experiences and needs of those facing homelessness. While the City maintains parklands and enforces by-laws, housing and social supports fall under the Region of Peel, as well as provincial and federal jurisdictions. Collaborative efforts are essential for meaningful solutions.
