Environment and Development Engineering – Stormwater Management Charges
In June 2019, City Council approved a new stormwater charge to provide dedicated, sustainable funding for the City’s stormwater infrastructure.
- The charge is owned and managed by the City’s Environment and Development Engineering division
- The charge is billed by the Region of Peel on your Regional Water Bill
- It will be effective from June 1st, 2020 and most property owners will see their first Stormwater Charge on their water bills in August of 2020.
What is Stormwater?
Stormwater, also known as runoff, is the rain and melted snow that flows from our properties to our streets and into a stormwater management system that includes:
- Over 2014km of storm sewer pipes
- 193 stormwater ponds.
- Over 40,000 catchbasins
- Over 23,000 manholes
- 130 water quality units
Due to effects of climate changes, the amount of water running off roofs and parking lots has been increasing. If left uncontrolled, it can cause flooding, erosion, environmental damage and a concern to public safety.
What is a Stormwater Charge?
A stormwater charge is a fair, equitable and transparent means of paying for stormwater services. This charge will appear as an additional charge on your Regional Water Bill. It will show the number of billing units for the property, the daily rate charged and the total number of days included in the bill cycle.
How is the Stormwater Charge calculated?
The stormwater charge is based on the amount of runoff from your property. The more hard surface you have on your property, the more runoff is produced.
Why is the stormwater charge increasing?
The increase is in line with general inflation adjustments as incorporated in the City’s 2025 budget and helps to ensure stormwater programs have the funding needed to maintain service levels and capital improvements. Learn more: www.brampton.ca/charge.
How much will the stormwater charge increase in 2025?
